A fluorometer is a device that is used to measure plant-based energy emission (ie. fluorescence) that results from de-excitation of molecules that absorb light energy (eg. chlorophyll pigments). The fluorescence signatures generated by pigment de-excitation and measured by a fluorometer are used to determine the state of plant organ health (eg. stressed vs non-stressed) as influenced by several variables like natural growth cycles, the growing environment and the storage atmosphere in which plant organs are held (eg. low oxygen apple storage rooms ). Thus, fluorometers are used by AAFC scientists to determine important physiological states of plant organs which can have a significant impact on commercial outcomes of horticulturally valuable products (eg. apples, pears). The portable fluorometer must be delivered to the The Kentville Research and Development Centre in Kentville, Nova Scotia by March 30, 2018.
