Evaluation of a New Canadian Technology for Coating the Inner Surface of Gun Barrels

    Description:

Between 2013 and 2015, DRDC carried out a project to evaluate a new Canadian technology, called Electro-magnetically enhanced Physical Vapor Deposition (EPVD®), for coating the bores of 25-mm M242 barrels. These cannons are currently used by the CAF on LAV III light armoured vehicles. A total of 24,000 rounds were fired by members of R22R at the Termoli range, CFB Valcartier, using four different barrels, produced by two U.S. manufacturers. Two of the barrels were available commercially and two were prototypes with the same EPVD coating, but of different thicknesses. The project succeeded in proving that the coating can, depending on its thickness, extend the life of 25-mm barrels by up to 12 times. Building on the success of this project, which greatly exceeded expectations, several projects (in Canada and in the U.S.) will follow to demonstrate the potential applicability of this new Canadian technology to all weapons systems, regardless of calibre. More specifically, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) will conduct a technical evaluation of this advanced, environmentally friendly coating technology on the Phalanx 20-mm Close in Weapons System (CIWS).
