Description
Aquaculture is a key economic driver for local economies, particularly in coastal, rural and some Indigenous communities. Recent reports have recognized the economic potential of the aquaculture sector and recommended ways to support the responsible growth of the sector. Recognizing their significant roles in rural and coastal communities, the province of B.C. supports BC’s seafood producers and processors by promoting local innovation to ensure local processing of local seafood. This includes supporting work to develop and implement a responsible plan, including technology-based solutions, to transition from open-net finfish aquaculture. Concurrently, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is engaged in the development and implementation of a framework to transition open net-pen farming in coastal B.C.
The province B.C. and DFO remain committed to supporting technologies that improve environmental performance of the aquaculture industry in British Columbia. There is an opportunity to assess site suitability, with respect to infrastructure, for emerging aquaculture production technologies, to inform efforts to advance the transition of marine net-pen salmon aquaculture in B.C.
This request for proposals (RFP) has two main objectives: identification and characterisation of required factors of suitable locations for land-based aquaculture; and an assessment of the commercial readiness of available alternative technology for marine based salmon production that limits interaction between farmed and wild fish. The assessment should include identification of parameters necessary to deploy these technologies (for example, but not limited to, power, access to shore power, infrastructure requirements, labour pool, minimum water depth, etc.).
Outcomes of the project will include a summary report on locations where land-based alternative production systems would be suitable, and the commercial readiness of alternative production technologies for marine-based systems.
The term of the project is approximately 9 months and must be completed by February 1, 2024. The budget of the project is a maximum of $100,000.00 including services and eligible expenses.
Further details as to the scope of this opportunity and the requirements can be found within this RFP.
