Understanding the standard related to disclosing greenhouse gas emissions

On April 1, 2023, the Government of Canada’s Standard on the Disclosure of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and the Setting of Reduction Targets came into effect. To help businesses understand what may be required of them, we are providing some insights and details on the Standard (PN-157).

According to the Standard, suppliers who are awarded federal contracts for goods, services and construction over $25 million may be requested or required to measure and disclose their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and set reduction targets.

Suppliers can demonstrate this by participating in Canada’s Net-Zero Challenge (NZC) or another approved equivalent standard or initiative.

The Standard does not apply to:

  • contractual arrangements (agreements between governments)
  • procurements using emergency contracting authorities
  • procurements established through foreign military sales
