1.0 Contracting Period:
May 2016 through to September 30, 2017
1.1 Objective:
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has a requirement to capture adult Atlantic salmon during their upstream salmon migration (see figure 1 and 2) in 2016 and safely transfer them above the existing fishway while it is under construction. A counting fence will be used to capture the fish, so this project will involve the installation, operation, and removal of a counting fence as well as the transfer /relocation of salmon above the existing fishway.
1.2 Background:
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will be reconstructing the fishway on Salmon Brook in 2016. Salmon Brook, a tributary to the Gander River is located in the community of Glenwood, in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. During construction, DFO will be responsible for providing fish passage around the existing fishway to ensure migrating salmon are able to spawn upstream.
2.0 Requirement:
Depending on environmental conditions, these activities will occur from approximately mid-May through to September on a daily basis. An operational schedule will be agreed upon at the start of the project between the contractor and the Project Authority. Contractor must be willing to provide services during various hours, if required.
The contractor shall be responsible for the installation, operation and removal of the counting fence, biological sampling and transfer/relocation of salmon above the existing fishway. Contractor should be familiar with project operations and be capable of completing all required operations and maintenance without DFO assistance
3.0 Scope of Work:
Adult Atlantic Salmon capture and transfer/relocation activities on Salmon Brook during the spring and summer of 2016. This will involve the installation, operation and removal of a salmon counting fence; biological sampling (e.g. obtain a length measurement of every tenth salmon); and transfer/relocation of salmon to a predetermined location above the existing fishway.
