The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Canada has a requirement for prototyping innovative solutions to modernize the electronic monitoring program for commercial fisheries. The solutions should leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI), or similar advanced technologies to provide high-quality catch information, create efficiencies in the electronic monitoring data workflows, and minimize the associated costs. The main goal is to evaluate the ability of using AI to promote cost-effective Fishery Monitoring.
The objectives of the solutions are to:
• Increase the quality of the data collected by the electronic monitoring program. • Decrease the costs associated with the storage and analysis of data collected by the electronic monitoring program. • Increase the efficiency of the review process to ensure timely access to catch information.
Should the solutions prove to be useful and reliable, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is prepared to provide the necessary components of the solutions to other electronic monitoring service providers (EMSP’s) who can adapt it for their respective fisheries.
