Drum Circle Classes

Solicitation number 162707

Closing date and time 2023/03/28 11:24 EDT

    Description
. The Contractor will provide Drum Circle classes for the participants of the Drug Treatment Court of Vancouver (DTCV) program. Drums and musical hand-held instruments will be provided for the participants to use at each class.  The classes will be provided up to twice a month, on-site at the DTCV treatment centre, located at 255 E. 12th Avenue, Vancouver, BC.
. Participants in the DTCV program, attend groups (4 phases of the program), one-on-one counselling, receive psychological and medical support, income assistance, urine screens, and are required to court appearances as part of the program. The participants (clients) going through the treatment/recovery program, need to be involved in education, volunteer work or employment, prior to the completion of the program and prior to graduation.  This is normally a challenge but particularly difficult during the past two+ years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
. An important goal for all participants is to make healthy connections and supports in their communities, to help them transition from the DTCV program to a non-addicted lifestyle. Finding resources and supports in the community where someone recovering from a lifetime of addiction can be challenging, and the Drum Circle is one way to help bridge the participants into their communities.  Research shows that participating in drumming provides therapeutic benefits, such as improvements in mood, cognitive functioning, depression associated with withdrawal, interpersonal relationship skills, and helps individuals to manage their stress.  This in turn helps with relapse prevention, and provides a significant sense of belonging, which many of our participants do not have (and some have never had) in their lives. For Indigenous peoples, it also offers a way of safe way to connect culture through drumming. This can lead to greater success and outcomes in maintaining their recovery once graduating from the DTCV program.
. Because of the specific needs of the clientele, the contractor will adapt the drum circle to the needs and challenges of those struggling with addiction recovery, mental health issues, poverty, or homelessness. This requires the contractor to have extensive experience teaching a variety of percussion instruments to a diverse population in different settings. Contractor must also have experience with and understand the needs and challenges of those struggling with addiction recovery, mental health issues, poverty, or homelessness.
