Description
The Ministry of Forests – Fisheries Program is seeking to procure the services of a Contractor to develop and begin implementation of a restoration plan that meets the goals and objectives of the Wild Horse River Restoration Project. The Wild Horse River is a 5th-order stream with a total watershed area of approx. 20,000 ha. This cold-water river originates in the Rocky Mountains approximately 13km East of Cranbrook, BC before entering the Kootenay River at Fort Steele. The Wild Horse drainage suffers from numerous anthropogenic impacts; however, historic hydraulic and some ongoing gold mining activities have caused most of the environmental damage. Primary environmental impacts include riparian degradation and river braiding/sediment deposition across the alluvial fan, which can cause large sections of the river to become dewatered or prohibit fish access upstream for fluvial resident and fluvial/adfluvial migratory bull trout (BT) and westslope cutthroat trout (WCT) populations.
The scope of services includes the development of a watershed restoration plan to address these anthropogenic impacts and enable subsequent implementation of restoration plan prescriptions. Restoration activities included in the restoration plan will focus on approximately 17 hectares of stream habitat (1-2 linear kilometers) and 90 hectares of riparian area in the lowest stream reach near the Wild Horse River confluence with the Kootenay River; however, a broader watershed focus will be required to address hydrological and sediment stability.

Contract duration
