Description
For BC agriculture producers one of the primary and critical uses of wood fiber shavings is for livestock bedding and poultry litter. The agricultural sector has faced critical short-term shortages in shavings supply creating potential food security issues and animal welfare concerns.
Climate related impacts to timber supply including mountain pine beetle and wildfire resulted in shortages of fiber supply. A sector wide shortage was experienced during COVID19, precipitated by the shutdown of lumber mills.
A cross ministry coordination group of Ministry of Forests and Ministry of Agriculture and Food was formed to facilitate an emergency supply of shavings/chips to support the agriculture sector. That cross-ministry coordination group established a Wood Fiber Steering Committee that includes representatives from each agricultural sector (poultry, beef, dairy and horticulture) to help identify industry needs and supply issues.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food, with engagement from the Wood Fiber Steering Committee, hired two external consultants to complete a supply and demand analysis and report: Wood Fibre Use in BC Agriculture (gov.bc.ca)
A recommendation from the report was the identification of a need for a response plan in anticipation of further climate related impacts to fiber supply. The plan will be a tool for use during emergency events and increase capacity of producers to adapt to anticipated sudden disruption to wood fiber supply.
The purpose of this project is to produce a response plan that will support producers in the event of a sudden disruption to critical shavings supply.
