Description
In British Columbia (BC), health profession regulatory colleges are responsible for ensuring that regulated health professionals provide services in a safe, competent, and ethical manner. These colleges, established under the Health Professions Act, also set and enforce standards of competence and conduct for the professions they regulate. The goal is to protect the public and provide assurance that care is delivered by qualified and capable professionals. Collectively, the colleges oversee 30 practitioner groups, consisting of approximately 120,000 registered health care and social work providers practising throughout BC.
In 2022, the B.C. government introduced and passed new legislation: the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA). This new legislation is expected to come into force in 2025, and includes provisions that directly address anti-discrimination requirements, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous specific anti-racism in health regulation and services. established a project to support a consistent transition from current legislation to the new HPOA across all health regulatory colleges. One of the new features of the HPOA is an expectation that regulatory colleges offer support services to individuals with complaints of sexual misconduct or discrimination. Support services will provide complainants access to counselling or other services that will support them during the complaint process, including (if applicable) any resulting hearing process.
To assist in this transition, BCHR is facilitating the search for a qualified vendor(s) to support the implementation of the support services program.
