Town of Kentville: Urban Forest Management Plan

The Town of Kentville is experiencing various climate-related risks such as extreme heat, drought, and invasive species, especially Hemlock Wolly Adelgid, which are severely impacting an aging, unevenly distributed tree canopy in the community. The town has identified gaps in current data which are limiting strategic plating and conservation, making Kentville’s urban forests exceptionally vulnerable. The Town of Kentville is home to two urban forests; the Gorge and the Ravine and also manages its urban canopy in the downtown core, including street trees and parks. In the long term (10-50+ years), the goal is to ensure the ongoing sustainable management and monitoring of its forest stands and to control HWA using natural methods involving predatory insects. Kentville’s immediate concern is to fill foundational data gaps and identify key priorities to protect and restore the urban canopy, and to safeguard hemlock stands using available chemical solutions until more sustainable options are viable.
