Description
The Scarborough Health Network’s (SHN) strategic plan places a strong focus on teaching and research to provide the very best patient care, train the next generation of health care professionals, and foster a culture that celebrates our team’s ideas and creativity. The vision is to be Canada’s leading community teaching health network, with the goal of attaining a teaching hospital designation.
Keeping this in mind, SHN and the University of Toronto (U of T) are partnering to create the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH). This initiative is the cornerstone of a shared vision to launch Scarborough as a centre of excellence in health care academia and research by 2024.
Each Academy offers a unique combination of educational settings, based on the strengths of the hospitals, while maintaining a consistent high standard curriculum. As a future anchor site for SAMIH, U of T students will complete their respective program requirements at SHN. In order to meet this demand, SHN will need to focus on the following areas:
• Curriculum Development: Clinically based curriculums, small group learning sessions, research program for learners
• Faculty Development: Increase faculty teachers, comprehensive faculty development program
• Facility Development: Adequate space for teaching
The New 80,000 SF Education Centre at the Centenary Site will feature:
• Various types of classroom spaces
• Simulation labs and support services/areas
• Academic and Research Workspaces
• Administration Workspace
• Library
• Food Services
• Support Services
• Common Use and Student Activity Spaces
• Family Health Teaching Unit
• Various Ancillary Spaces
