    Description

    1. Scope

The overall scope is to provide materiel identification / parts data cleansing in support of the Asset Management Project and the Materiel Management Rationalization Initiative (MMRI).

     2. Objective

Our various inventory systems contain data on a wide variety of materiel such as repair parts, equipment spares, consumable items and tools used in the maintenance of the CCG large Vessel fleet. This data needs to be properly identified, validated, cleansed and standardized for use in our Asset Management System.

     3. Background

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) uses an Asset Management System (AMS) to support Lifecycle Materiel Management (LCMM) through the reporting and tracking of maintenance activities work Orders), inventory and project installations and modifications. The AMS facilitates standardization and improves maintenance best practices. It provides complete information to all personnel involved in the execution of maintenance and to all levels of management for decision-making purposes.

There are two asset management systems currently being used by the CCG; IBM’s® Maximo® for shore based assets and the small vessel fleet, and ©DMSI’s MAINTelligence™ for the large vessel fleet. Both of these systems have an inventory application that can support materiel management / inventory management functionality. A recent decision was made by CCG Senior Management to consolidate these systems into a single solution, IBM’s Maximo.

The CCG has adopted the NATO Codification System (NCS) whereby each “item of supply” is assigned a single unique identification number, the NATO Stock Number (NSN). The NSN includes the corresponding item naming descriptions in both official languages.

Within the CCG materiel identification services are provided via the Materiel Identification Center of Expertise (MICOE) which is under the functional authority of the Manager, Supply Chain Management.
