DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS 1.0 EMAIL PHASE

The Government of Canada established Shared Services Canada (SSC) on August 4, 2011 with the mandate to obtain better value for the management and operation of information technology infrastructure. Information technology (IT) infrastructure consists of the underlying IT equipment, software, networks, and supporting organizations required to deliver government programs and services. A key element of IT infrastructure is electronic mail, or email. Email has become one of government’s preferred communications mediums for both internal use, and externally, with Canadian citizens, other government partners, and industry.

In 2013, as part of its core mandate, SSC entered into a seven-year contract with a vendor to provide email service to SSC Customers. The intention of this initiative was to consolidate the email services of SSC’s 43 Customer organizations into a single service. With the current email services contract set to expire in June 2020, SSC is working to ensure the continuity of email services in the digital era and thus seeking the opinion of stakeholders, including industry representatives, on the best approaches in achieving this goal as well as advancing GC’s position in adoption of Digital Workplace technologies.
