Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the early 1980's, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) have been severely affected by the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections (STBBI) in Canada. In 2016, gbMSM made up an estimated 45.5% of people living with HIV. A national survey will provide valuable information for guiding public health interventions to address HIV among the gbMSM population.

PHAC set four strategic goals in its recently released framework for action on STBBI: reduce the incidence of STBBI in Canada; improve access to testing, treatment, and ongoing care and support; and reduce stigma and discrimination that create vulnerabilities to STBBI. There is currently a gap in the data needed to measure Canada’s progress towards meeting these goals for populations most affected by HIV in Canada, including gbMSM. In order to bridge the information gap, PHAC intends on contracting the primary data collection of behavioural and biological data among gbMSM that are needed to monitor key STBBI-related indicators.
