    Title: Former Alaska Highway Deactivation

Location: Peterson Canyon Area, Km 679.15 - 690.50, Alaska Highway, BC

This procurement has been set aside under the federal government's Procurement Strategy for Aboriginal Business (PSAB). In order to be considered, a supplier must certify that it qualifies as an Aboriginal business as defined under PSAB and that it will comply with all requirements of PSAB.

    Description of Work:
The project is the roadway in the former alignment of the Alaska Highway between km 679.15 and 690.5 in the Petersen Canyon area. The former highway section is located approximately 180km west of the community of Fort Nelson, BC and 220km southwest of the community of Watson Lake, BC. The south end of the Project is located approximately 1km northwest of the confluence of Petersen Creek and Toad River, the north end is located approximately 10km south of Muncho Lake. The Project is within the Northern Rockies Regional District. The Project is surrounded by Muncho Lake Provincial Park, which is contained within the Muskwa - Kechika Wilderness Management Reserve.

The abandoned alignment of the Alaska Highway will be deactivated, either partially or completely. The intent of road deactivation is to place a road in a self-maintaining state that will indefinitely protect adjacent resources. In general, road deactivation work include:
    - Removal of bridge structures and abutments, and regrading approach fills, and
    - Removal of culverts, and
    - Re-establishment of natural drainage patterns, and
    - Stabilizing the road prism to reduce impact of sediment transport, and
    - Removal of other infrastructure and debris, and
    - Promote natural revegetation.

The road deactivation will include removal of five bridges with decks and the abutments / backwalls of a sixth bridge.

The road north of Drogheda Lake will be partially deactivated to allow passage of motor vehicles, and this will entail replacing two bridges with fords traversable by a 4x4 pickup truck. The remaining (south) section of the road will be fully deactivated and barricaded against motor vehicle access but allow foot traffic.
