The City of Calgary requires a qualified architectural team to act as a Coordinating Registered Professional for the design and construction of the Thornhill Aquatic and Recreation Centre – Service Cycle Upgrades project. The City will select a single integrated project team to provide all services from pre-design to post-construction, delivering the envisioned project as outlined in this RFP.
The Thornhill Aquatic and Recreation Centre, comprising the Thornhill Aquatic Centre and Murray Copot Arena, is strategically located near schools, playfields, the Huntington Hills Skatepark, and Judith Umbach Library. It fronts on Centre Street N and is part of the Primary Transit Network[1] serving communities like Huntington Hills, Beddington Heights, Thorncliffe, and Highland Park. The centre provides services to nearby affordable housing, schools, and civic facilities. It is a vital community hub, offering after-school care and affordable recreation.
The Service Cycle Upgrade project aims to enhance the Thornhill Aquatic and Recreation Centre, improving recreation services and program options.
An overall summary of the scope includes:
Site upgrades for better access and optimized use.
Revised entrance lobby for improved movement and access.
Expanded weight and aerobics programming space with new additions.
Enhanced accessibility in pool changing rooms and washrooms.
General structural, mechanical, electrical, and lifecycle upgrades and
Arena upgrades for improved functionality and access.
The work to be performed by the Consultant will include the work and coordination of the following disciplines for all phases of the work from pre-design validation to post construction services:
Architectural design and prime consultant services.
Engineering disciplines for the design and construction of the facility and site.
Building envelope consulting.
Sustainability consulting and energy modelling.
Landscape architecture; and
Cost consulting.
Architects and engineers will need to be registered with Alberta Association or Architects (AAA) and Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as required by their disciplines.
Unless otherwise stated in the Agreement Letter, the award under this RFP will be for all Phases of the Requirements, subject to approval by The City after each Phase.

Contract duration
The estimated contract period will be 58 month(s), with a proposed start date of 2024/10/31.
