Description
The Rocky-Nordegg Rail Trail (Rail Trail) is a multi-phase project to develop a year-round multi-use (motorized and non-motorized) “Signature” trail system following an abandoned historic rail line and covering the approximately 100 kilometers between Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg, Alberta.
The project has been formally worked on by the Government of Alberta in partnership with Clearwater County since 2009 and will link development nodes, Public Recreation Areas (PRAs), and various other trail systems along the David Thompson Corridor (DTC), while offering educational, cultural, and touristic opportunities. The Rail Trail has the potential to offer a high-quality experience that will draw visitors and be designated as a “Signature Trail” by the Province of Alberta. This trail forms a part of a network sustainable multiuse trails along the DTC which serve to avoid ecological degradation, and improves the trail system to match the increasing recreational demand, while not compromising cultural and natural resources. The trail will be subjected to frequent off-highway vehicle (OHV) use and must be able to withstand long term traffic.
Working towards the outcomes and objectives identified within the Project Plan, the successful Proponent is to apply proven, non-urban technical design practices in conjunction with appropriate tools and skilled resources through the Conceptual Design, Detailed Design, Approval Process, Issued for Tender and Issued for Construction phases for the project to achieve the end result desired by the Province.
