Salt Spring Island Spongy Moth Trapping

Closing date and time 2023/05/18 19:00 EDT

    Description
Spongy moth (formerly gypsy moth) is an invasive species that has been found on Salt Spring Island. The Spongy Moth Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) has developed a monitoring program to protect Salt Spring’s farms, parks and trees from this invasive pest. Last eradicated on Salt Spring Island in 2007, the spongy moth has once again been introduced to the area.  Routine monitoring by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency detected a small population near Vesuvius in 2021 and more intensive monitoring in 2022 indicated that the population has grown and spread.  Ordinarily, the Spongy Moth TAC would recommend that the area be treated with Foray 48B (active ingredient Btk) by ground or air.  However, due to limited resources, the treatment was replaced with an intensive monitoring plan for the summer of 2023, using pheromone traps.  The results of trapping will allow the TAC to precisely define the boundaries of this population, determine how quickly the population is growing, limit the growth and spread of this pest by trapping a significant fraction of the male moths, and potentially reduce the area that may need to be treated in the coming years.
The Supplier will be required to provide public outreach support for the Salt Spring high intensity trapping program. This requires experience with public outreach, a strong understanding of spongy moth and spongy moth management in B.C. Additionally, the Supplier will be required to hang spongy moth traps on a pre-determined grid, collect trap location and trapping information on a mobile device and must be familiar with using the Survey 1-2-3 application.
The Supplier must be available to attend a Survey 1-2-3 refresher course on May 24, 2023 (virtually); assist with planning and attend a public open house on Salt Spring Island on June 7, 2023;  in mid-June, engage with private landowners to set-up traps and enter the locations in Survey 1-2-3; in August, check the traps and update Survey 1-2-3; in September, collect the deployed traps, update Survey 1-2-3 and submit any potential positive traps to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
