Description
The Ministry of Energy Mines and Low Carbon Innovation (EMLI) has received funding from the Government of Canada’s Environment and Climate Change Canada ("" or “ECCC”) Department’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund (NSCSF) for a project to improve the integration of climate change and carbon considerations into reclamation of major mines in British Columbia to increase the rate and success of activities that increase sequestration through nature-based solutions. EMLI is looking to develop ecosystem carbon accounting guidelines that would support mining companies and reclamation practitioners in quantifying pre-disturbance carbon storage capabilities, as well as identifying opportunities to integrate carbon sequestration in reclamation and closure planning. This is a phased project over three years. Phase 1 one was completed fiscal 2022-2023 and consisted of a literature review and jurisdictional scan.
