CULTUS LAKE SMALLMOUTH BASS SCALE AGING
Solicitation number 185705

Closing date and time 2023/12/10 19:00 EST
Description
Since the suspected illegal introduction of smallmouth bass into Cultus Lake in 2017, the native fish community has been at high risk of negative impacts from this invasive species. Population risk is especially high for endangered fish species in Cultus Lake, the Cultus Lake sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and endemic pygmy sculpin (Cottus aleuticus, Cultus Population). In the spring of 2023, the Ministry of WLRS launched the first year of a multi-year smallmouth bass suppression plan which includes various monitoring approaches including population monitoring through spring tagging and acoustic telemetry, smallmouth bass suppression through nest destruction and male removal, and fishery monitoring through creel surveys.
Part of the population monitoring includes taking scale samples from captured smallmouth bass and later analysing the age of the scales at a qualified lab. During the 2023 field sampling season a total of 892 smallmouth bass scale samples were taken it was determined that a subsample of 500 scales will be sufficient for aging analysis to produce reliable results. This project is for the aging analysis of 500 smallmouth bass scales to help with population monitoring and effectiveness monitoring of the suppression methods being trialled.
