Solicitation number 188415

Closing date and time 2024/02/23 17:00 EST

    Description
The City of Salmon Arm (City) is situated between the peaceful shores of Shuswap Lake and beautiful surrounding mountains and hills. It is comprised of a year-round population base of approximately 20,000 people and offers an incredible diversity of economic and tourism-related amenities. The City maintains over 60 facilities and buildings valued at almost $120 million dollars.

The Shuswap Recreation Society manages the Shaw Centre on behalf of the City of Salmon Arm. The centre includes two NHL sized ice arenas. The ammonia refrigeration plant, which cools the ice surfaces is comprised mainly of three reciprocating compressors (two 6 cylinder and one 4 cylinder), brine pumps, and evaporative condenser (30 HP fan) and two plate & frame ammonia-brine chiller, one for the Spectator arena and the other for the Hucul Pond Arena. Currently the plant has two energy recovery measures implemented to provide heat for the arena underfloor and snow melt pits. There are two natural gas boilers which provide heat for the Zamboni, and the domestic hot water (DHW) system. Other components that consume gas include ten gas fired air handling units, two make up air units, a desiccant dehumidifier and some space heaters used for the arena.

Salmon Arm Recreation Society procured the services of Polar Engineering Ltd.  to ensure an accurate analysis of the average run time hours using the cooling capacity of the two main compressors, and the ice surfaces cooling requirement. In addition , name plate data was gathered from equipment to allow the unit-specific manufacturers software to be used to determine the energy consumption and operating characteristics of the components under the study.

Furthermore, a site visit was completed to document how the heating and cooling systems operate for the facilities. This ensured that the proposed site-specific energy conservation measures (ECMs) fit and integrate well with the existing mechanical and electrical equipment onsite.
