Description
VGN Resources Group Inc. (VGN) will be the Program Administrator for projects under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food's (Ministry) extension programming for environment and climate change. This RFP and project is administered by VGN on behalf of the Ministry.
There is a need in the agriculture industry that was identified through the Islands and South Coast regional extension engagement, for knowledge transfer and on-farm research about soil topics to adopt and implement on-farm Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) such as cover cropping, rotational grazing, and nitrogen management related to soil health. Improving soil health through improving organic matter and soil structure crop production practices is an important climate mitigation strategy (GHG reduction and carbon capture) as well as a climate adaption strategy related to many of the challenges related to climate change such as improving the soils capacity for drought and flooding resilience.
Farmers are looking for locally relevant and site-specific information on practices and knowledge on improving soil health for managing drought, extreme rainfall resilience, crop nutrition, and carbon capture. There is much interest in hands-on demonstration opportunities for learning practical ways and looking at examples to help them adopt and implement BMPs in their situation.
