Description
VGN Resources Group Inc. (VGN) will be the Program Administrator for projects under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food's (Ministry) extension programming for environment and climate change. This NOI and project is administered by VGN on behalf of the Ministry.
This project will quantify the impacts of drought and irrigation restrictions on silage corn yield, forage production, feed quality and livestock operations in the Greater Vernon Water, Salmon River, Bessette, Koksilah watersheds. The BC Dairy Association (BCDA) will be the contractor to lead the work.
Silage corn is a critical feed ingredient for beef and dairy operations. Water stress during silking and pollination can significantly reduce yields and starch content, affecting livestock nutrition and increasing feed costs. While these impacts have been widely observed by producers and nutritionists, local data is limited.
Project ActivitiesBCDA to Subcontract a Professional Agrologist to lead the work. The subcontractor is expected to: Engage with local feed company representatives and beef and dairy producers to provide information and input into analysis. Recruit producers within the watersheds that have experienced Temporary Protection Orders (TPOs), water deficit, and drought conditions as well as those outside the affected regions who have not experienced TPOs Compare yield and forage quality sample information from affected corn silage fields, and corn that is not under water restrictions from the regions. Collect yield and production data from participating farms. Analyse silage quality including but not limited to protein, fibre, energy, moisture and starch content. From data collected from participating farms: Evaluate feed replacement requirements and costs. Estimate economic impacts to livestock producers. Create extension materials: Technical report, factsheets, and presentation. Extension will include producer and industry engagement and outreach on findings. The project will provide evidence-based information on production losses, feed quality impacts, feed replacement costs and economic consequences of drought and related water restrictions. Results will support future drought preparedness, emergency response planning, and industry decision-making.
