Description
In the 1980’s, regional ecologist Susanne Stevenson indicated that for Southern Mountain Caribou (SMC) herds, low elevation (LE) habitat was not adequately mapped (Stevenson and Hatler, 1985). Subsequently, many Provincial and Regional iterations of caribou research and recovery planning followed between the 1990’s to the late 2000’s. The Mountain Caribou Recovery Implementation Plan (MCRIP) process in the late 2000’s resulted in the protection of 2.2 million hectares of high elevation habitat from forest harvesting.
In 2014, the Federal Southern Mountain Caribou (SMC) Recovery Strategy identified both high and low elevation critical habitat for southern mountain caribou, southern group, as
• high elevation winter and/or summer (spring, calving, summer, fall/rut) range delimited by the Local Population Unit (LPU), and
• the low elevation early winter and/or spring range delimited by the LPU boundaries.
This RFP seeks to develop models to support the delineation and attribution of low elevation habitat for Omineca Region southern mountain caribou (southern group). The successful proponent will use modeling processes to develop, analyse and test low elevation habitat model/s with which to describe and delineate, by season, low elevation caribou habitat in non-late-winter seasons. Model inputs can include but are not limited to, historical and current caribou locations, movement and survey data, telemetry data, reports, biophysical variables, caribou ecological and behavioural attributes, and non-late winter caribou forage values to develop, test and analyse habitat model/s with which to spatially describe low elevation caribou habitat in non-late-winter seasons. Although this contract work is specific to the Hart Ranges, Narrow Lake, and North Cariboo subpopulations of southern mountain caribou, but model outcomes may be relevant to other southern group herds.
