    Description:
The RFP is an invitation to submit offers for The Supply and Install of a Wireless Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) System, as further described herein.
Interdisciplinary researchers at The Brain & Mind @ Western will use the Wireless fNIRS System to study the fields of 1) perception and action, which brings the neuroscientific study of the senses – touch, body position, hearing and vision – and of motor actions closer to the real world through advanced approaches to address real-life challenges such as rehabilitation in Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and other movement disorders; 2) hearing and communication, which includes fundamental systems involved in hearing and speech perception and rhythm perception, and will inform the design of hearing aids, assessment of hearing impairment, our understanding of neuroplasticity after cochlear implantation in children, and assessment of language function in children with neurological conditions; 3) optimizing development in childhood, which focuses on understanding key aspects of child development, and minimizing the impact of early life challenges (such as prematurity and epilepsy) and developmental disorders on subsequent quality of life; and 4) critical care medicine and neurocognitive conditions, focusing on assessment and prognostication in disorders of consciousness and traumatic brain injury, in delirium, epilepsy, and prematurity; and refining criteria for brain death.

The Wireless fNIRS System will be used in both task-based and resting-state experiments with sessions ranging from minutes to hours. This will include physically active tasks such as gait studies that require the equipment to be wireless and wearable. The system will also be used for two-person hyperscanning paradigms including child-to-adult and adult-to-adult. Several projects will require whole-head coverage with a modern level of channel density. Participants will range from school-age to adults and will include populations who are highly sensitive to physical discomfort and prone to fidgeting.

The Wireless fNIRS System will be operated by researchers of varying levels of experience in laboratory testing facilities, school and daycare settings, and at the hospital bedside. The system will be shared by several users across these locations and transported semi-regularly.
