Project DescriptionThe University of Waterloo (the “University”) is undertaking Phase 2 of Kiinomaage Aki (Land of Knowledge), an Indigenous land based teaching and learning initiative located at Columbia Lake on the University’s North Campus. Kiinomaage Aki is envisioned as a culturally grounded outdoor learning environment that centres Indigenous ways of knowing and supports land based education, cultural practice, community engagement, and intercultural learning. The initiative is guided by Indigenous knowledge systems and is grounded in the understanding of land as a living teacher. Kiinomaage Aki supports Indigenous led teaching, ceremony, and community gathering while also serving as a place of shared learning for Indigenous and non Indigenous learners within the University community and beyond. The project is being advanced through a phased approach. Phase 1 has focused on establishing immediate, non permanent uses of the site to enable ceremonies, teaching activities, and community gatherings (i.e. a teaching lodge and sweat lodge). Phase 2, which is the subject of this Request for Service Qualifications, will focus on the planning and design of permanent and semi permanent exterior spaces that strengthen the site’s long term capacity for Indigenous land based learning and community use.
