Description
An Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement for National Wildlife Areas and Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (conservation areas) was signed in August 2008 by the Minister of the Environment and Inuit representatives, including Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and the three regional Inuit Associations (Qikiqtani, Kivalliq and Kitikmeot) to meet obligations under the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement (1993). The Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement commits Environment Canada to establish and support Area Co-Management Committees to manage each of Environment Canada's existing and new protected areas in Nunavut, including holding two face-to-face meetings per year in the affected communities, with the possibility of additional meetings. Area Co-Management Committees are tasked with providing advice to the Minister on planning and management of Environment Canada's protected areas, as well as preparing Management Plans for the protected areas. This contract is related to meetings of the Nivvialik Area Co-Management Committee for the Kuugaarjuk McConnell River Migratory Bird Sanctuary.
