3.1 GeoConnections
Through three five-year phases, GeoConnections has been coordinating the national effort to build the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). To date, a significant investment of time, expertise and funding from the Canadian federal government has been matched by CGDI stakeholders which has resulted in an online network of resources that improve the sharing, use and integration of information tied to geographic locations in Canada (http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/earth-sciences/geomatics/canadas-spatial-data-infrastructure/8906).
GeoConnections' objectives are:
- Increase awareness of the benefits of using geographic information and tools to achieve goals for social, economic and environmental priorities;
- Facilitate the integration and use of geographic information to support effective decision making;
- Coordinate the development of national policies, standards and mechanisms and support their implementation to ensure maintenance and updating of geographic information and compatibility with global standards;
- Keep Canada at the leading edge of accessing, sharing and using geographic information via the Internet.
