    Description

    Canadian CubeSat Project (CCP)

    1.Background

1.1 The Canadian CubeSat Project (CCP)

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is currently developing the Canadian CubeSat Project (CCP), an initiative to provide faculty members in Canadian post-secondary institutions and their students with an opportunity to participate in a full scale CubeSat mission. This initiative will provide a maximum of thirteen (13) grants to post-secondary institutions, with an objective of having a participating team from each province and territory of Canada, to develop, build and operate a CubeSat over approximately a three year period beginning in Spring 2018. Collaboration amongst provinces and territories will be highly encouraged particularly when one province or territory prefers to team up with another province or territory to build a CubeSat.

Each team will be led by a faculty member, referred to as the Principal Investigator (PI), from a Canadian post-secondary institution. This initiative aims to provide students with hands-on education and experience in a real space mission.

The size of each CubeSat shall be from 1U to 3U (1U = 10cm x 10cm x10cm cube) . It is planned that the launch of the CubeSats will be from the International Space Station (ISS). As such, all CubeSats will be placed into an ISS type orbit (approximately 400 km Perigee, 410 km Apogee, and 51.6o inclination).

Further information regarding CCP can be found at: http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/sciences/canadian-CubeSat-project.asp.

    1.2 CubeSats

CubeSats are a class of nanosatellites based on the California Polytechnic State University’s CubeSat Standard, have form factors that are multiples of 10 cm cubes and typically weigh less than 10kg. In addition to commercial missions, this class of satellites are commonly used for educational, technology demonstration, and scientific missions as they offer a comparatively inexpensive method for accessing space. CubeSats commonly use commercial off the shelf (COTS) or lower technological readiness level (TRL) components than larger spacecraft and typically accept higher levels of risk than conventional missions.

    2. Request for Information (RFI)

    2.1 Purpose of the RFI

The purpose of this RFI is to solicit information from Canadian companies interested in offering expertise, products and/or services to faculty members in post-secondary institutions that have shown an interest in participating in the CCP.

    2.2 Nature of RFI

This RFI is not a bid solicitation, Call for Tenders, nor a Request for Proposal. This RFI is not to be considered in any way as a commitment by Canada, or as authority for the respondent to undertake any work that could be charged to Canada, or as a commitment to issue Requests for Proposals (RFP’s) or award any contracts in relation to this project. Information collected is intended only as a resource to provide potential CCP applicants (i.e. faculty members in Canadian post-secondary institutions interested in participating in the CCP) with awareness of the availability of products, expertise, or services potentially offered by Canadian companies. The facilitation of any collaboration, partnership, or otherwise is left at the discretion of the principal investigators to negotiate.

    3.Response Costs

Canada will not reimburse any respondent for expenses incurred in responding to this RFI.

    4.Treatment of Responses

    1. Use of Responses: Information submitted to the CSA in response to this RFI will be distributed to CCP grants applicants and awardees, posted on the CSA website (http://asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/sciences/canadian-cubesat-project.asp), or could be used in resource material distributed as a part of the CCP.
    2. Review Team: A review team composed of CSA representatives will review all responses provided. The CSA reserves the right to distribute or not information provided by respondents.
    3. Confidentiality: Information submitted is planned to be made available to several organizations and people. As such, respondents should not provide to the CSA any information considered proprietary or confidential.
    4. Clarification: The CSA may, at its discretion, contact any respondents directly to seek clarification regarding the information provided.
