In British Columbia, wildfire is an important natural disturbance and a key driver of landscape resilience. Abundant research and government strategic initiatives have identified prescribed burning and mechanical fuel reduction treatments (‘thinning’) as essential components of restoration and proactive management in fire-adapted ecosystems.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has identified prescribed burning and mechanical thinning as key management strategies in the Columbia National Wildlife Area (CNWA). As such, ECCC is in the process of developing a thinning and prescribed fire restoration program for the upland portion of the Wilmer Unit.

The CNWA is located in the southern portion of the Rocky Mountain Trench, near the District of Invermere, BC. The CNWA is home to many species at risk and sensitive habitat features that are dependent on fire as a natural ecological disturbance process. Thinning and prescribed burns are some effective treatment methods for building resilience, maintaining biodiversity, and restoring critical habitat for wildlife in the CNWA.
