General Requirement Preamble

The Certification & Engineering Bureau (CEB) at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada requires three (3) shielded chambers in order to carry out regulatory compliance testing, standards development activities as well as measurement studies. 


Equipment Specification Requirements:

A turnkey shielded chamber is a “ready for use” standalone room that provides isolation from external sources of radio frequency (RF) noise and minimizes internal reflections of RF signals to reduce multipath interference.  The shielded chambers shall be lined with RF absorbing materials and have alternating current (AC) line filters to reduce the amount of noise that may propagate on the AC power line.

The specification requirements outlines the technical requirements for the shielded chambers and the installation.

Chamber 1 - Mandatory Requirements

Chamber and related component Specifications

RF-Shielding

Specification requirement:
 
• The minimum internal dimensions of the chamber shall be equal to or greater than 3.75 m long, 3 m high and 3 m wide. 

RF-Shielded Door 

Specification requirement:

• The minimum door size shall be 4’ x 7’. 
• The door shall be a single-leaf manual door.

Waveguide Air Vents

Specification requirement:

• The minimum of two 18” x 18”, or larger, waveguide air vents

Power line filters

Specification requirement:

• The minimum of two dual line 30A power line filters
• The power line filters shall meet the applicable CSA, or equivalent, electrical safety standards
• The power line filters shall have a threaded brass ground stud

Lighting

Specification requirement:

• There shall be an LED lighting kit which includes a power supply, filter and a minimum of two LED lights

Camera System

Specification requirement:

• There shall be a camera system included which includes filter, network switch and video cable.
• The camera shall be wall mounted.

Connector panel and penetrations

Specification requirement:

• There shall be a blank connector panel measuring a minimum of 12” x 12”
• There shall be a means of connecting a sprinkler system
• There shall be a general purpose pipe penetration to provide access for cables with a minimum diameter of 1”

Floor

Specification requirement:

• The building floor shall be covered by a dielectric underlay and vapor barrier
• The interior chamber floor shall be covered with vinyl floor tile
 

Absorber Materials

Walls and ceiling

Specification requirement:

The internal walls and ceiling shall be lined with ferrite panels and an RF absorbing material with the following characteristics:
o The maximum height of the absorber shall be less than 21 cm
o The reflectivity of the combined ferrite and absorber shall be less than -10 dB over the frequency range of 30 MHz to 40 GHz

General Requirements
Freight

• Delivery of the components of the chamber to the CEB shall be included. The CEBs location is 3701 Carling Ave, Building 94, Ottawa, Ontario K2H 8S2.

Installation

• Design and installation of the chamber (enclosure and absorbers) shall be included and shall be completed by March 31, 2020.  The installation is at the CEBs location, 3701 Carling Ave, Building 94, Ottawa, Ontario.

Performance Testing

Specification requirement:
 
• The installed chamber’s shielding performance shall be verified against the requirements of MIL-STD-285 at 1 GHz.
