For the supply of one Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) system for the AAFC National Electron Microscopy Center, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Ottawa Research and Development Centre, Ottawa, ON. A modern floor model SEM system is required and shall consist of the SEM itself (sample chamber, vacuum systems, and electron gun), various detectors and a computer and software operating system. This purchase is to replace an outdated and irreparable existing system that is more than 20 years old and failing. In the National Electron Microscope Centre, SEM is essential to a wide variety of approved STB projects (plant biology, taxonomy, plant pathology), in addition to ORDC collections (insect, the herbarium and fungal collections) and collaborative projects with other AAFC research centres and outside agencies. SEM brings an essential visual proof to augment genomic sequencing. As agricultural science evolves into the nanoscale world, SEM with advanced resolution, higher magnification and greater versatility is essential. The Centre requires on-site state of the art technology to support expanding programs brought on by new staff with modern research ideas. It is the largest microscopy unit in AAFC and possesses the greatest variety of equipment for diversity in electron microscopy experimental design. This SEM system will support biodiversity, taxonomy and satisfy the research requirements of new staff. It will enable users to perform microscopy supporting multidisciplinary data, and will expand current research possibilities by permitting more directed analysis. The system must be sufficiently robust to serve a variety of programs and research streams, with ease of use and a minimum down time.
