Environment Canada (EC) requires an instrument known as the Time-of-Flight Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (tof-ACSM) for real-time measurement of aerosol chemical composition. One of these tof-ACSM instruments is to be deployed in a portable monitoring trailer for multi-year operation in many areas of Canada, such as theOil Sands Region, to investigate emission, transport and transformation of aerosols related to air pollutant sources. The second instrument is to be utilized for specialized aerosol research conducted by scientists in the Altantic Region of Canada.Thenature of operations at such monitoring locations or during special studies requires the instrument to be able to detect low levels of various chemical species on the aerosols in real time with high time resolution. The instrument will support current and future work under Clean Air Regulatory Agenda (CARA) initiatives or similar EC programs.
