Objectives Environment Canada (EC) requires 395 geolocator data-loggers to mount on seabirds (Cassin's Auklet, Ancient Murrelet, Rhinoceros Auklet) breeding along coastal BC during the spring of 2014. The loggers will record near full-range ambient light with complementary conductivity indicators allowing location tracking and behavioural studies of tagged birds. Four interface boxes with communication software will also be needed for activation of units prior to their deployment. The work The geolocator data-loggers should meet specific criteria in order to be suitable for deployment on our seabirds of interest. Specifically, (a) the unit should weigh < 1% of seabird body mass (Cassin's Auklet ~180 g, Ancient Murrelets ~200 g, Rhinoceros Auklets ~500 g), (b) The unit should be small and non-obtrusive, ideally shaped like a brick with dimensions not exceeding 14 x 8 x 6 mm, (c) It should mount solidly for long-term (1+ year) attachment with a cable tie around a plastic leg band, (d) The unit should have long battery life, ideally > 2 years from time of manufacture, (e) The unit should record near full range ambient light levels, ideally once every ~5 minutes, (f) The unit should record changes in conductivity as required. The Manufacturer is also required to provide customer support. Specifically, the manufacturer (a) must provide customer support service for unit activation using interface box, mounting of units on seabirds, and data download, and (b) must be willing to attempt data retrieval from units should EC be unable to extract data using interface box (e.g. battery is dead upon recovery of unit). There will be no additional charge for this data retrieval if requested during the predicted life span of the battery, (c) must supply a list of at least 3 clients that EC can contact to verify that their loggers reliably meet all technical specifications outlined above. Name referrals must be submitted with bid. The interface boxes with communication software must have the appropriate technology to activate geolocators as described above. geolocator data-loggers for seabirds Quantity: 395 each. interface boxes with communication software for seabirds Quantity: 4 each.
