Currently the project is in the preconstruction phase, detailed design work is underway in order to build and test a dish prototype, SKA-P, on-site is South Africa in the next 2 years. Construction of the first phase, SKA1, of 133 dishes is scheduled to begin in 2018. The National Research Council has developed novel Single-piece Rim-supported Composite (SRC) radio reflector technology at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in Penticton, BC that is one of two technologies being considered to be used for the construction of the SKA dishes. The Dish Verification Antenna 1 (DVA1) project, a 15 m offset Gregorian reflector with a composite single piece reflector surface, is the result of 8 years of development of design and manufacturing processes for construction of single piece composite reflectors for radio telescopes. NRC is seeking a Canadian industrial partner to manufacture the SKA-P reflector assembly should the SRC technology be chosen and optionally the 133 SKA1 reflectors as a part of Canada's contribution to the SKA project. The requirement is conditionally limited to Canadian goods and/or services. Further information is available in the bid document.
