L’Institut d’Innovations en Écomatériaux, Écoproduits et Écoénergies à base de biomasse (I2E3) de l’ORGANISME PUBLIC Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) projette de faire l’acquisition de 500Tm de granules de composite de biocharbon destiné à être utilisé à l’intérieur du procédé d’un partenaire industriel ainsi que dans un environnement de recherche composé de professeurs, de chercheurs, d'étudiants à la maîtrise, au doctorat et au postdoctorat. L’entreprise partenaire au projet de recherche est spécialisée dans la transformation du quartz en silicium métallique. Afin de réduire le quartz en silicium métallique, l’entreprise utilise actuellement du charbon minéral, un matériau fossile non-renouvelable contribuant à l’émission de gaz à effet de serre. L’entreprise vise donc à substituer le charbon minéral par un composite de biocharbon fabriqué par la pyrolyse du bois et adapté à son procédé métallurgique.
