Satellite Imagery Reader, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) collected satellite imagery of areas frequented by narwhal and beluga whales in the Canadian High Arctic in August/September 2020 (maximum coverage of 20,000 km2). DFO requires that whales in the photos be identified, and enumerated and a final abundance estimate from each estuary/region be determined.   

The work will provide scientific information (i.e., distribution and density of whales in estuaries) used by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to inform abundance and distribution of whales, assist with future survey planning, and identify important habitat.
