REQUIREMENT
This project involves the replacement of the Lower Brewers Swing Bridge that spans the Rideau Canal National Historic Site at Lockstation 45, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The existing structure is a 21.3 m long unequal-armed truss wood swing bridge with a corbelled frame and cross-planked wood deck. The bridge is oriented east-west. The overall width of the bridge is 4.33 m and the bridge supports a single lane of traffic with a maximum width of 3.34 m. The new bridge will be slightly elevated to allow better access for maintenance and will include a number of improvements to restore the ten-ton display. The existing concrete abutments and pivot pier will be removed to one level, allowing for the installation of new concrete foundations supported by micropiles. Mechanical components must be refurbished or replaced so that the bridge can be manually operated with a cart and emergency winch. The rehabilitation work will be completed by closing the roadway after the detour is in place. The associated roadway work will involve minor vertical alignment improvements as well as reconstruction of the approaches to facilitate the elevation of the superstructure and improved drainage characteristics. The work described is to be completed outside of the 2021-2022 navigation season, with the swing bridge and canal to be fully operational by May 1, 2023.
