The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is hosting regional information and engagement sessions to present and solicite feedback on its national inventory and risk-based strategy developed to assess and prioritize vessels of concern. Below are the details of the next information and engagement session scheduled for Montreal, Quebec.
    _____________

As you may know, wrecked, abandoned, dilapidated and hazardous vessels (collectively referred to as vessels of concern) can pose risks to the environment, public health and safety, local interests such as fishing and tourism, and also culturally-sensitive areas.

Unfortunately, the cost of retrieving and disposing of these vessels, especially sunken ones, often exceed their salvage value. As a result, some owners will simply abandon their vessels once they are no longer seaworthy, which becomes an issue for the local community and taxpayers to address.

The Oceans Protection Plan is the largest investment ever made to protect Canada’s coasts and waterways. Initiatives under this Plan are making marine shipping and transportation safer, restoring the health of marine ecosystems, and focussed on creating new partnership opportunities for Indigenous and coastal communities.

The National Strategy on Wrecked and Abandoned Vessels, as part of the Oceans Protection Plan, would prevent the occurrence of new vessels of concern and address the vessels of concern that already exist in Canadian waters.

As part of the National Strategy, the Canadian Coast Guard is developing a national inventory of vessels of concern and a risk-based strategy to prioritize how we address them. Coast Guard is anticipating on engaging interested Indigenous partners, coastal communities, and industry stakeholders over Spring 2019. As such, Coast Guard will be presenting and soliciting feedback at:

Regional Canadian Marine Advisory Council (CMAC) - Prairies and Northern Region in Montreal on May 15, 2019 between 13:35 and 14:35 during the CCG/DFO Updates. To register, please go to: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/pnr-cmac-spring-2019rpn-ccmc-le-printemps-2019-tickets-55197230402
