The scope of this project is the modification of the campus domestic water system to separate potable and non-potable fixtures and equipment into two separate distribution networks. Work includes the replacement of the domestic water booster system, and installation of a new duplex backflow preventer for the existing piping, which will be used solely for non-potable fixtures upon completion of the work. A new potable hot piping network is to be installed throughout the campus, including a new hot water heater with accessories, and hot, cold, and recirculation piping. A new tempered water piping network is being installed and connected to all emergency fixtures, and will be fed using a new tempered water mixing valve. The hot water piping will be tempered using a tempered water mixing valve as well. New work in Building 15 includes a new hot water heater and accessories for potable fixtures and a new duplex backflow preventer to serve the existing piping network, which will now serve only non-potable fixtures.

Tie-ins for potable fixtures will be scheduled and completed in phases. The new potable water network will be installed up to the tie-in points, including the new booster pumps, and a shutdown will be scheduled to permit the changeover from the existing pumpset to the new one. Once changeover is complete, tie-ins can be scheduled with the client for individual fixtures or groups of fixtures. These tie-ins will involve cutting back existing pipe branches to isolation valves or the mains and capping the remaining piping, as well as connecting the new pipe network to the existing fixture supplies. Scheduling will require advance notice for the client where lab spaces are affected.

Many new pipe branches will travel through existing millwork and lab spaces. In some cases, existing pipe chases are used for these drops, while in others new bulkheads are to be installed by the contractor, as noted. Upper millwork removals shall be performed by the client, while lower millwork shall remain in place. The contractor is responsible for cutting the backs of lower millwork and for drilling through countertops to permit new piping installation. Where piping is installed above finished ceilings, the contractor shall remove and reinstate the ceilings to accommodate new work.
